Full Repointing — Residential Property, Halstead, Essex.
Full external repointing of a period residential property using a lime-based mortar mix, restoring weathered joints and preventing further moisture ingress.
The Challenge
The property had been repointed previously with a hard cement mortar that was trapping moisture and causing the bricks to spall. The existing mortar needed to be removed without damaging the brick arrises, and replaced with a sympathetic lime mix.
How I Approached It
All deteriorated joints were removed to a minimum depth of 20mm using an angle grinder with dust extraction, controlling airborne dust throughout. Where the brick arrises required extra care, work was slowed accordingly. A lime-based mortar was mixed on site to match the original in colour and texture, then applied in two passes and finished flush to allow the wall to breathe.
The Result
The finished wall is clean, consistent, and properly protected. The client was particularly pleased with how closely the new mortar matched the original — you'd never know it had been done.
