What Is Lime Mortar Repointing?
Lime mortar repointing is the process of removing deteriorated mortar from the joints of older brickwork and replacing it with a fresh lime-based mix. Unlike modern cement mortars, lime is softer and more flexible — allowing it to move with the natural expansion and contraction of the masonry without causing damage to the bricks themselves.
Using the wrong mortar on older or heritage brickwork is one of the most common and costly mistakes in masonry. Hard cement mortars trap moisture and can cause spalling, cracking, and long-term structural damage. How I Work
Survey & Assessment
I visit the property personally to inspect the existing mortar and brickwork, determine the correct lime mix, and identify any underlying issues before a single tool is picked up.
Mortar Removal
Old mortar is removed to a minimum depth of 20mm using an angle grinder with dust extraction to control airborne dust and protect the surrounding environment. Where a heritage supervisor or conservation requirement specifies hand tools only, that instruction is followed — this is always discussed and agreed before work begins.
Mixing & Application
I mix the correct lime mortar to match the original in colour, texture, and composition, then apply it in layers to achieve a durable, weather-tight joint.
Finishing & Curing
Joints are finished to the appropriate profile and the work is protected during the curing period to ensure a strong, lasting result.
