Garden Walls & Alterations
New garden walls, boundary walls, raised beds, and structural alterations — built properly in brick, to last.
Built to Last, Built to Look Right
A well-built garden wall does more than mark a boundary. It adds structure and character to a property, provides privacy and security, and — when done properly — will stand for generations without needing attention. The difference between a wall that lasts and one that doesn't comes down to the foundations, the mortar mix, and the quality of the build.
I take on new garden wall builds, full or partial rebuilds of existing walls, raised planters and retaining walls, and structural alterations to existing brickwork — including removing or modifying openings. Every job is assessed individually and built to the right specification for the site.
What I Can Build
Garden & Boundary Walls
New single or double-skin brick walls to define boundaries, provide privacy, or replace tired timber fencing with something that will genuinely last.
Retaining Walls & Raised Beds
Properly engineered retaining walls and raised planters built to handle the lateral pressure of soil — not just stacked up and hoped for the best.
Piers & Gate Pillars
Solid brick piers and gate pillars built on proper footings, with the strength to support gates and withstand years of use without leaning or cracking.
Structural Alterations
Removing or modifying openings in existing brickwork, inserting lintels, and making structural changes to walls — assessed thoroughly and carried out to a safe, well-finished standard.
How I Work
Site Visit & Assessment
I visit the property personally to assess the ground conditions, discuss what you're looking for, and advise on the right specification — including foundation depth and mortar mix.
Foundations
Every wall starts with the right foundations. I excavate to the correct depth for the soil conditions and load, and lay a concrete strip footing before a single brick goes down.
Brickwork
Bricks are laid to the correct bond pattern, kept plumb and level throughout, and pointed to a consistent finish. I work to the agreed specification and leave the site clean and clear at the end of each day.
Finishing & Capping
Walls are finished with the appropriate coping or capping to shed water and protect the top course. The site is left clean and the work is reviewed with you before I leave.
Why foundations matter more than the brickwork
Most garden walls that lean, crack, or collapse do so because the foundations weren't right to begin with — too shallow, too narrow, or laid on unstable ground. I always excavate to the correct depth for the soil type and wall height, and lay a proper concrete strip footing before any brickwork begins. It adds time to the job, but it's the difference between a wall that lasts twenty years and one that needs rebuilding in five.
